The Hazards of Hospitals

The Hazards of Hospitals
Created by: Medical Billing and Coding

I tell people this stuff in the emergency room, straight up, when they want admission to the hospital and it's not indicated. A hospital, I say, is a great place to be if you're critically ill, and a terrible place to be if you can be treated safely at home, keeping you within your family, familiar surroundings, and the flow of your life.

There are no Dilaudid PCAs at home, though, so I lose that argument more often than not.

  1. When did they stop allowing Dilaudid PCAs for home use... lol.
    Just kidding, of course.

I was always puzzled by those who would come in demanding to be admitted with minor problems. There are more risks than beneifts for the mildly ill.

  2. Man, you could right whole books about that. So people are convinced that there is something seriously wrong with them and if they are admitted we will have to figure it out. They have no idea how completely a stable patient can be ignored by a busy inpatient service.

Some people, I think, have just gone through life demanding things, and measuring their importance by their ability to get others to bend to their will. An admission to them is like getting a substitution at restaurant that insists "no substitutions." It's like getting their room changed in a hotel over the air conditioner noise. Evidence that they are pushers, not push overs.

Some people I think have so firmly self-defined as sick that they genuinely believe they can't care for themselves. Some people are just lonely.
